How long will it take my nail to grow back?

i had my left big toe nail completely removed due to infection, the dr said it would take about a year for it to fully grow back. it's been a month since then and i still don't see any sign of new nail growth. how long should it take before i see any kind of growth at all? or should there have been a sign of new nail already? maybe it won't grow back?How long will it take my nail to grow back?
